How to Jump-Start a Car

Jump Start a Car

When your vehicle won’t start, you probably need a jump-start, car battery service, or some other way to reset your car battery. Most likely, all you need is the first option. You can learn how to jump-start a car and what to do when your car won’t jump-start from this guide written by the team at the Joe Morgan Honda service center. That way, you won’t need a jump-start car service. You can also replace your car battery at our service center near Cincinnati.

The Steps to How to Jump-Start a Car

First, you’ll need another vehicle and a set of jumper cables. A jump-start car service that serves the Middletown area like AAA can also help. Once you’re prepared, follow the following steps:

  1. Park the car with the good battery directly facing the car with the dead battery. Turn both vehicles off and engage their parking brakes.
  2. Open the hood of each car and find their batteries. There may be plastic hoods on the battery terminals, remove those.
  3. Make sure the battery terminals are clean and free of any corrosion, then identify which is positive and which is negative.
  4. Connect the red clamp to the positive post on the dead battery.
  5. Uncoiling the battery cable, hook the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery with the charge.
  6. Connect the black clamp to the negative post on the good battery.
  7. Connect the final clamp to an unpainted metal surface on your car’s frame.
  8. Once every clamp has been hooked up securely, start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery. Then, start the engine of the car with the dead battery.
  9. This should jump-start the dead vehicle, but once it’s started leave the engine running for at least ten minutes. At this point, you can carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were placed on and shut off the car that was used to help jump-start the dead car in that order.
  10. Be sure to keep the engine running on the restarted vehicle for at least 10 minutes. This will recharge the battery and ensure it doesn’t die again right away. Your owner’s manual will have more info on recommended times.

What to do if Your Car Won’t Jump-Start

Sometimes, your car won’t jump-start. This generally means that you need a battery replacement, but it could be a sign of a more serious problem. These steps can help troubleshoot the issue:

  1. If you only hear a clicking sound when you try to start your car, the starter might be malfunctioning. Schedule service at our service center in Monroe to get a replacement.
  2. If the engine fails to turn over, but the electrical systems of the car turn on, there could be any number of issues. You’ll need the ignition switch, battery, starter, and fuses checked to find the problem. You should have a professional diagnose the issue.
  3. Sometimes the problem is just that you didn’t keep your vehicle running long enough after getting the jump. Remember, leaving the car running allows the battery to recharge fully after it’s been drained.
